BYOC stands for bring your own computer. The organiser rented a hall, ran power and network to rows of trestle tables, and sold you a seat. You brought the machine.
That sounds like a logistical compromise, and it began as one. It became the defining feature of an era, and its decline changed competitive gaming more than any rule change ever did.
The physical reality
A competitive setup of the period was a mid-tower and a CRT monitor. A 19-inch CRT is a two-person lift; a 21-inch one is a genuine hazard on a stairwell. Players drove, and they packed the car around the monitor.
Once inside you got a table edge, a power socket and an ethernet drop. Everything else was yours: keyboard, mouse, mousepad, headphones and — critically — your own driver settings, your own sensitivity, your own refresh rate. High refresh rates were one of the reasons competitors stayed on CRTs long after flat panels were common elsewhere, and a swap to unfamiliar equipment cost real accuracy.
Events ran two to four days, more or less continuously. People slept under the tables. That was not endurance theatre; the hall was booked and the flights were expensive, so the schedule filled every available hour.
Why organisers wanted it
Providing hardware for a thousand competitors is impossible for an organisation with a handful of staff. Even providing it for the sixty-four players in a main bracket is a serious capital and logistics problem: machines must be sourced, imaged, transported, set up, tested, supported and shipped back.
BYOC pushed all of that onto the attendees, who were mostly glad to take it, because they trusted their own machines and nobody else's. The organiser's job reduced to power, network, tables and a roof — which is exactly why the halls looked the way they did. Exhibition centres were the only venues that could supply enough amperage and enough floor.
The network was not trivial either. A few thousand machines on a temporary LAN, assembled in a day and torn down in an afternoon, with no ability to reimage a misconfigured client, is real engineering. Event network crews were a genuine specialism and largely volunteer.
What LAN gave the competition
Two things, and both still matter.
Latency parity. On the same switch, every connection is effectively identical and effectively instant. Online, ping is a competitive variable: twenty milliseconds is a real edge in any game where a duel resolves in a few hundred, and server location decides who gets it. LAN removes the argument entirely, which is why LAN results have always been treated as the honest ones.
Observability. You can see the opponent's hands, their screen and their machine. Every serious form of cheating in a competitive shooter is either software on the player's machine or information the player should not have, and both are enormously harder when a referee is standing behind the chair and the machine is not one the player brought. That is why, decades later, tournaments with money on the line still insist on offline finals.
The pipeline nobody replaced
The important thing about a BYOC hall was not the hall. It was that the tournament and the amateurs were in the same building.
On a stage at one end, the main bracket played. Twenty metres away, several hundred to several thousand people were running pickup games, side tournaments and open ladders on their own machines. The distance between playing casually and being noticed was one good result in an open qualifier that happened in the same room, on the same weekend.
That produced an unusual social structure: professionals were physically accessible, amateurs were visible, and teams recruited by watching. Nobody designed it. It was a side effect of the economics of not owning any computers.
When qualification moved online — as soon as domestic broadband made it viable — the on-ramp became a ladder rating and a chat server. That is more accessible in one sense: you no longer need to be able to drive to Dallas or Jönköping. It is less legible in another, because being good online and being noticed online are different problems, and the second now requires an audience rather than a result.
The transition happened in two steps
Step one: qualifying went online. Broadband made large online leagues practical. This was straightforwardly good. It cut the cost of entry to near zero and widened the talent pool internationally.
Step two: the final became a broadcast set. Once the audience was watching remotely, the value of the physical event shifted from participation to production. An arena show wants identical organiser-supplied machines, a controlled stage, a fixed schedule and a camera plan. It does not want three thousand strangers' towers in the same building, because they are a fire load, a network risk and a scheduling liability.
So the two functions separated. The event became a television studio with an audience. The BYOC hall, where it survives, became a separate product with its own ticket.
Where it survives
Large BYOC halls still exist — DreamHack in Sweden is routinely described as the world's largest LAN party, and QuakeCon in Texas has run a BYOC hall for a very long time. What changed is their relationship to the competition. The hall is now a festival attached to a broadcast rather than the substrate the competition grew out of.
Be clear about what was gained. Online qualification is cheaper, larger, more international and more meritocratic in raw terms. Anyone arguing the LAN era was straightforwardly better is arguing for a smaller and more geographically privileged talent pool.
What was lost is harder to price: one physical space where amateurs and professionals mixed, where reputation was built in front of witnesses, and where the scene owned its venue rather than renting attention from a platform.
