Not every popular game becomes a competitive one. The titles that carried the circuit era shared a short list of properties, and the ones that failed to make the jump usually failed on one of them.
What a tournament game needs
Determinism. The same input produces the same result. Randomness that decides matches makes a bracket meaningless, and the smaller the sample — a single game rather than a best-of-five — the more damage it does.
A bounded match length. An organiser buys floor space by the hour. A game that can last twenty minutes or ninety is a scheduling problem before it is anything else, which is why timed halves and round limits show up in competitive rulesets that the retail game never had.
Configurability with a specification. Competitive play needs a spec: map pool, server settings, permitted client settings, what counts as a legal script. A game you cannot pin down cannot be governed, and without governance results from different events are not comparable.
Something an observer can follow. A spectator with no dedicated camera tooling has to be able to tell who is winning. This constraint has shaped competitive gaming more than any other, and the era's organisers understood it long before they had any way to distribute the picture.
Arena shooters
The Quake lineage is where competitive PC gaming starts. Two players, symmetrical maps, item timers, and a scoreline that updates continuously.
Arena duelling worked as a tournament product because the skill is almost entirely mechanical and positional, and both are visible. Item control — knowing when the armour respawns and being there — is a resource game hidden inside a shooter, and it is comprehensible to a spectator in a way most strategy is not.
It also has ideal event properties. A duel needs two stations. A best-of-three fits a predictable slot. There is nothing to explain about team composition. And because the format is 1v1, a bracket of 64 entrants needs no roster management, no substitutes and no team travel budget.
The origin story of the whole scene sits here: at Red Annihilation in 1997, id Software's John Carmack gave his Ferrari to the winner, Dennis "Thresh" Fong. It is a genuinely good story, and it is also the wrong place to begin a history, because a one-off prize is not a profession — nobody plans a year around a car. What made a profession possible was recurring seasons with published terms, which is what the organisations founded around that time set about building. That is the subject of how a world tour was built.
Tactical shooters
Counter-Strike changed the shape of the hall. A 5v5 game needs ten stations per match, ten seats, ten sets of peripherals and — in a BYOC venue — ten people who all got to the same city.
What it gave in return was an economy. The buy round, the save round, the decision to force: these turn a shooter into a game with a resource state that persists between rounds, and that state creates an arc within a match that a duel does not have. Rounds are short, the halves are structured, and momentum is legible on the scoreline.
Its competitive integrity is also robust in a specific way: it is round-based, so a single mistake costs a round rather than the match. That reduces variance without extending the schedule, which is a rare combination.
The cost is operational. Teams are expensive to fly, hard to keep together, and any roster change resets a season's identity. Every organisational problem in competitive gaming is worse for team games — and team games are also where nearly all of the audience turned out to be.
Real-time strategy
RTS is the third pillar, and its competitive era belongs disproportionately to Korea, where StarCraft was built into a broadcast product with dedicated gaming channels, purpose-built studios and a fixed weekly slot rather than being retrofitted into one.
Strategically it is the most demanding of the three genres: economy, scouting, build orders and mechanical execution simultaneously, in a game of incomplete information. That incomplete information is exactly what makes it hard to observe. Watching an RTS properly means seeing both sides at once, which requires an observer client and a commentator who can explain what a build order implies. Korea solved this because the product was designed as television from the start; Western circuits mostly did not, because for them the broadcast was bolted onto an event that already existed.
That difference — a spectator product as a design constraint versus as a marketing layer — is the most useful comparison in the era's history. It is picked up again in what replaced the circuits.
The venue consequences
Genre choice is not only a competitive decision. It reshapes the entire event.

A hall with 64 stations can run 32 duels at once, or six team matches. That single line determines how large an open bracket you can seat, how many rounds you can clear before lunch, and therefore which format is even available to you. Genre choice is a venue decision wearing a competitive costume.
The property none of them had
All of these games belong to somebody. A circuit built on a title does not control its own foundation: the balance patches, the tournament licensing, the anti-cheat, the release schedule, and ultimately whether competitive play is supported at all.
Football has no owner. Every esport does, and that fact turns out to determine most of what happened next.
